A fast-moving news architecture built for daily Malaysian readers

Media Gazette is a Malay-language digital newsroom publishing daily coverage across politics, business, entertainment and national affairs. The site had a different job from a typical brand website: organising a constant stream of new articles into something readers can scan in seconds.

The challenge

A news portal lives or dies on how fast a reader can find something worth clicking within seconds of arriving. The homepage has to act as front page, editor's picks and category navigation all at once, while giving every article room to be indexed and found later through search.

The site also needed built-in advertising inventory from day one, since advertising — not subscriptions — is the primary revenue model at this stage.

What we built

  • A front-page hierarchy, not a blog feed — the homepage leads with a multi-story lead block — a headline story plus supporting stories — mirroring how a print front page prioritises what matters most that day.
  • Ten-category navigation for fast scanning — Malaysia, Dunia, Politik, Hiburan, Bisnes, Sukan, Tular, Gaya Hidup, Jenayah and Lain-Lain sit in the primary nav, letting returning readers jump straight to the section they follow.
  • Trending, Comments and Latest tabs on one page — a compact tabbed module lets readers switch between what's popular, what's discussed and what's newest without leaving the homepage.
  • Ad inventory built into the layout — dedicated banner and sidebar ad placements are wired in from the start, supporting the publication's advertising-led revenue model.
  • Author and timestamp on every story — each article surfaces its writer and publish date up front — a basic but essential trust signal for a news publisher.

Design decisions worth noting

Familiar news-portal conventions over originality

readers scanning for news expect a specific layout grammar — top nav, category bar, trending sidebar — and Media Gazette's structure meets that expectation rather than reinventing it.

Category colour-tagging for instant recognition

each story card carries a coloured category label so readers can identify a story's beat before reading the headline.

The result

Media Gazette runs on a content architecture built for volume — new stories publish into a structure designed to surface them by recency, category and popularity at once, with ad inventory built in from day one to support the publication.

“Media Gazette is Malaysia's dedicated digital newsroom, providing real-time updates and deep-dive analysis on politics, the economy, and national affairs.”
